A Message from Sara
Dear Young People,
As you prepare for another school year, you’re probably starting to think about all of the events, activities, appointments, and projects that will quickly claim places on your calendars. Soon your daily schedules will set you in constant motion, and it’s easy to get so caught up in planning the next thing that you forget to enjoy the present.
At this time in your lives, the tendency can be to focus on who you will become instead of who you are. It’s hard not to—you have so many hopes and dreams and SO much potential that those around you want to harness and channel it into helping you plan the BEST future for yourself.
It’s also been a habit for adult parishioners to think of the youth in our parishes as “future” parishioners; those who will “take over the responsibilities” and “carry on traditions” after they finish school, find a career, etc. I cringe when I remember my first parish address because I actually said those words! The good news is, I’m a fast learner. I learned very quickly that the parishes of Mount Saint Peter, Saint Joseph, and Saint Mary are full of vibrant young hearts and minds that know the love of Christ and can’t wait to share it with the world! Why wait? The energy and enthusiasm that you bring to your parishes and community are essential to their life and growth, so why not start now?
As Pastoral Associate for Youth Ministry, it is my role to accompany you as you continue to grow in faith by providing opportunities for you to gather, interact, learn, worship, praise, and serve. Along with other adult and teen CYMNK leaders, I will support you as you ask questions about our faith and discuss the challenges that you face every day. I will encourage you as you continue to realize the many gifts that God has given to you so that you can become the “best version of yourself” and in doing so, lead others to share in the amazing love of Christ. I will serve our parishes and our community alongside you. I will also probably beat you at cards.
The Church, our parishes, and our communities need you! You are not the “future” of the Church. As Pope Francis said in his closing homily for this year’s World Youth Day, “You, dear young people, are not the future but the now of God.”
