Advent invites us to rejoice. At the same time it exhorts us to wait with patience for the coming of the Lord now approaching. It exhorts us not to be discouraged, to resist every kind of adversity, with the certainty that the Lord, who is near, will strengthen our faith. Let us, therefore, wait for the Lord in joyful hope, trusting in His promise of salvation.

Beginning on December 17, the Church begins its final phase of preparation for Christmas by singing the great O Antiphons.
Drawing upon the rich imagery found in Sacred Scripture, these antiphons express the Church's urgent longing for the coming of the Messiah.
