Doing the Rite Thing:
Celebrating Sunday Mass with Power and Passion
The Sacred Liturgy is the “source and summit” of all we do. And no
day is more important to the Eucharist than Sunday. It is the Lord’s
Day, the First Day of creation, the Day when Christ defeated death
and the Spirit blew upon the disciples. Or as Duke Ellington put it:
Come Sunday, oh, come Sunday
that’s the day.
Lord, dear Lord above,
God almighty, God of love,
please look down and see my people through.
It is on
Sunday that the Holy Spirit gathers the Church to do the “rite
thing” and in so doing satisfies the deepest hunger of the human
heart: union with God in Christ Jesus. O Happy Day!
Over
four nights we will go deeper and deeper into the mystery of the
meaning of Sunday rest and resurrection:
Monday:
“O
Happy Day” - Sunday, The Lord’s Day;
of being gathered, of hearing and doing God’s Word
Tuesday:
“Word
of God, Come Down to Earth” - The Introductory Rites and the
Liturgy of the Word;
of giving thanks and praise to God for working wonders, saving and
setting us free in Christ by the Spirit’s power
Wednesday:
“Count Your Blessings”
- The Liturgy of the Eucharist;
of being transformed into Christ’s Body - the diners becoming the
dinner for justice’s sake and the life of the world
Thursday:
“Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ” - The Concluding Rites.
These
are four evenings not to be missed. Come and learn why no one may
ever say, “Mass is boring!” It is anything but boring. It is the
inestimable privilege of praising the ineffable God.
